What is Chaos?

The Realm of Chaos is the home for many terrible entities of cosmic power. The Realm of Chaos is another dimension that exists parallel to the Old World. It is said that the shadow selves of every creature in the Old World also live in this shadow world. It is also known as the Aethyr, the Warp, the Underworld, the Utterdark and many other names. In the Realm of Chaos time has no meaning and the events of the past, present and future all meld into one, chaotic existence. From time to time, magical gates between the Old World and the Realms of Chaos were opened and the creatures entered into the Old World. Even though these gates have remained closed since the extinction of their builders, the progeny of Chaos continue to thrive in the Chaos Wastes.

North of the furthermost regions of the Empire lay the Chaos Wastes. The Chaos Wastes are lands where the warp gates of the Old Ones once stood. It is a strange land where the laws of nature and magic have little meaning. Chaos Warriors, Beastmen and other strange creatures all thrive in the Chaos Wastes, it is here that the mutating power of warpstones may produce all manner of hideous new monsters, and it is from here that they infiltrate the Old World to spread their malignant religion.

The Four Powers of Chaos

There are four vile and loathsome Dark Gods of Chaos four brothers of darkness.

Khorne, the god of war, the lord of skulls. He is able to take many shapes: a gigantic blood stained hound, a bestial warrior, hands dripping with blood, a brooding king sitting on a throne of skulls. His bellow of rage echoes throughout time, it is he who brings the curse of war to the Old World.

Tzeentch, the great conspirator, the master of mutable timestream. He is the sorcerer of Chaos, and his sphere of influence is change. He is the ever-changing one, the mutator of mankind. His followers infiltrate human society, forever plotting, biding their time, waiting for the perfect moment to rise up against law and order.

Nurgle, the nauseating lord of the plague. He is described as a vast mountain of rotting and corpulent flesh, ridden with all the diseases of the world. It is Nurgle, the lord of physical corruption and disease, morbidness and hopelessness, that is responsible for the horrific diseases that have such a terrible toll on the inhabitants of the Old World.

Slaanesh, the keeper of hidden vices and terrible passions, the lord of forbidden pleasures, the decadent Prince of Chaos.

Mortal Servants of Chaos

There are many mortals that serve the daemonic overlords of Chaos. From the black clad Warriors of Chaos to the barbarian tribes of the wastes, the Chaos Marauders who worship the Chaos gods, rewarded and corrupted with mutations for their faithful service. The Beastmen, whos numerous spawn have spread throughout the Old World, and perhaps even beyond. Perhaps the most dangerous are the heretics that worship the Chaos Gods in secret with the cities of the Old World. Their power grows in secret and many powerful and influential men secretly throw their lot in with the ruinous powers, hopeing to gain great power and immortality as their reward. Locked away in their deep cellars and hidden temples these despicable and sometimes insane mean perform hideous rites and living sacrifices to appease their dark masters. Each year they are said to be more numerous and more powerful.
